We traveled to Salt Lake City 2 weeks ago to begin the clinical trial. After some initial tests to baseline Norma’s condition she started the regimen. The regimen includes a chemo pill and pills that are either the trial drug or a placebo. The major side effect is dry skin and an acne type rash. So far no serious side effects have surfaced. Since entering the clinical trial 2 weeks ago, Norma has resumed her normal activities. On the July Fourth weekend the Jackson Hole Community Band played a concert at Jackson Lake Lodge. Then on July Fourth Norma played in Jackson’s July 4th parade. After a short rest at home she biked to join the band in opening Jackson’s Music in the Hole. The photo shows her at the Jackson Lake Lodge Concert. We have biked several times with distances of up to16 miles. Norma is shown biking her way to Karen’s house. In addition, to these activities she has had strength sessions with her personal trainer, as well as a yoga class.
It has to be noted that last week Royal was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It has been discovered in the early stages and we are evaluating the treatment options, including the coordination with Norma’s treatment.
This past week her brother Peter visited for a few days. His last visit was for our wedding during a major snow storm. Peter was thrilled to see the beauty of the area which touched him deeply. The photo of Norma and Peter was taken at the Jenny Lake Overlook with Cascade Canyon in the background.
The Jackson Hole Community Band’s season was topped off with a great band concert at Jackson’s Center for the Arts combined the Wyoming National Guard 67th Army Band. This concert was dedicated to Norma to honor her unwavering support and contribution to the band while inspiring all with her courage. The finale of the concert was playing “Stars and Stripes Forever” with the piccolos standing in front of the band for their solo. Norma is in the center of 5 piccolos playing her best. She was in tears at the conclusion of the piece overwhelmed with the dedication honoring her. A video of a portion of “Stars and Stripes Forever” is included. To play the video click on the play symbol in the image and hopefully the video should play. If you would enjoy a complete video of “Stars and Stripes Forever” use the following link.
The video is about 5 minutes in duration and the entire band can be seen.
The love and support Norma has received from the band members, friends, family and the community at large has been the best medicine for Norma in meeting her greatest challenge.

Hi Guys,
ReplyDeleteAm glad to hear that the clinical trial is going well. When we were in HS I didn't know that you had that many siblings. Once again Norma, your activity level continues to amaze me. The scenic photos are fabulous Royal. Royal - about your discovered prostate cancer - assuming that you have caught this before it has spread beyond the prostate, don't opt for a radical prostatectomy; consider brachytherapy instead. I have first hand experience; email me at grab11@verizon.net and I'll be happy to discuss it with you. Rock on!

Love to you both!!!

Thanks so much for keeping everyone posted. Saw Gib and Linda at the picnic and they both said you look great. Keep up the good work!!! I believe attitude and outlook are at least 50% of the battle. You have those in abundance, Norma. And what a cheerleading team you have led by Royal. The reunion next year has been scheduled for August 25, 2012. Plan on that.
